Trangia 25

Overview

The Trangia 25-2 UL is part of the “Series 25” range from Trangia, designed for roughly 2 people. The UL (“Ultra Light”) version aims to shave off weight compared to the standard sets, while maintaining a stove, windscreen, pans, and kettle setup that is robust, simple, and reliable. It uses an alcohol (“spirit”) burner as its heat source, with the usual Trangia set-up of nested pots and windshields, plus the additional kettle to enhance boiling speed and utility.

In short, it’s a time-tested aluminum cookset for those who want reliability and simplicity—especially good for backpacking, camping, canoe trips, etc.—without the complexity (or sometimes fragility) of ultralight or multi-fuel stoves.

Strengths

  1. Reliability / Robustness Very durable build. Aluminium pots and pans are simple to maintain, and the design is forgiving. Tough against knocks, weather, and general outdoor abuse. Users often remark that the Trangia setup works virtually every time.

  2. Wind Protection / Stable Heat The windscreen (storm-shield) is very effective. It helps protect the flame/wind from gusts and makes heating more efficient in bad weather. That matters especially with an alcohol burner which is more sensitive to wind than

    many gas stoves.

  3. Simplicity & Low Maintenance Few moving parts. The spirit burner is simple. No pressurised fuel, no complicated regulators. Easy to clean, less to go wrong.

  4. Good Value for What You Get It comes as a full kit (pots, kettle, spirit burner, windscreen etc.), so in terms of versatility vs price many users feel you’re getting a lot. Also long life means cost per use tends to go down.

  5. Fuel Type Advantages Alcohol fuel is widely available, burns relatively clean, is safe in many more settings (less risk of leaking, less harmful fumes) compared with some liquid fuels. For many casual to moderate backpacking or walking trips alcohol is “good enough”.

  6. Packability & Nesting Design The components nest into one another compactly. The kettle, pots, pans, shields all fit together efficiently. This keeps bulk down (even if weight is not minimal).

Weaknesses

  1. Weight (vs Ultralight Options) Even in the UL version, this is heavier than many backpacking ultralight stoves/kits. If your priority is minimal pack-weight, there are lighter stoves and minimal cook-sets.

  2. Boil Times Slower / Less OutputThe spirit/alcohol burner produces less heat than typical gas/propane or multi-fuel burners. In cold or windy conditions this becomes more noticeable: longer boil times, more fuel consumption.

  3. Fuel Efficiency in Poor Conditions Wind, cold, or altitude can degrade performance. More fuel is needed, and managing flame/windshield is more critical. Also, the flame is open, so losing heat to surroundings is more likely.

  4. Durability of Aluminum While aluminium is light and fast heating, it’s more prone to dents, scratches, and in long term can deform or warp if overheated. Also cleaning can leave stains, and heating unevenly can lead to hot-spots.

  5. Not Ideal for Solo Ultralight or Large Groups For just one person, many buyers feel it’s overkill; conversely for 3-4 people meals or heavy cooking, it might be under-size. Also, carrying extra pots (kettle etc.) adds bulk.

  6. Altitude & Cold Weather Limitations Alcohol stoves are less efficient in very cold or high altitude settings; flame output is reduced, priming is more finicky. If your trips involve severe conditions, you may want a more potent or alternative stove setup.
